Lieutenant-General Roméo Dallaire, a Canadian
hero who led the United Nations Assistance Mission for Rwanda, witnessed
first-hand humanity’s failure to stop genocide. He is the one who coined the term Human Promise, when he said
that “No human is more human than the other.” This quote is the inspiration forThe Human Promise, since we believe that every human, regardless of
where they were born, has the right to live in peace and security and be able
to pursue a better life. The Human
Promise is a group made up of teenagers from the Montreal area that believe
strongly and are committed to doing our utmost to ensure that action is taken
to preserve human dignity and further the causes of those people in terrible
situations, especially children.
Our biggest ongoing campaign at the moment is
to try to help the people of the Darfur region of the Sudan. The conflict there has been called the
world’s worst humanitarian disaster, and it has claimed over 300 000
lives. Our main goals are to sensitize
our peers and encourage teenagers to take action and raise money to help end
this crisis. Although teenagers today
may be concerned primarily with their own day to day lives, we believe that the
care, advocacy, and support from teens are necessary to end the slaughter and
destruction of lives in Sudan.
Our organization is now in its third year and
we have been quite successful so far. We
are in the process of making a major donation of about $10, 000 that has
been raised to build a well in a refugee camp near Darfur. This well will enable children to go to
school, as they no longer have to spend their days walking miles to get water,
and enable women to lead safer lives as they will not have to leave the camp’s
safety. As well, The Human Promise donated
$5, 000 to send relief to the victims of the terrible earthquake in Sichuan,
China.
The choice is yours; will you close your eyes
to human rights abuses, or will you do all you can to end them? If you value human life, if you respect and
value people of all countries and cultures, if you are committed to ending the
killing of innocent people, then join our cause. For only with your help can the Human
Promise truly fulfill the promise to humanity.
